Our Story

How it started

Balto started with a simple frustration: Dr. Friedlander was spending too much of his time fighting insurance companies instead of caring for patients.

Again and again, he saw patients who clearly needed treatment have that treatment delayed, denied, or buried in paperwork. The problem was one of medical necessity, but unnecessary barriers to care. The insurance system had become so complex, slow, and difficult to navigate that even patients who should have been covered were getting denied.

Dr. Friedlander found himself writing letters, resubmitting forms, chasing documentation, appealing denials, and trying to decode payer rules that seemed designed to obstruct rather than deliver care. Every hour spent battling insurance was an hour taken away from patients.

Gil was one of those patients. When Dr. Friedlander helped him get covered for a medication that would have otherwise cost over $1,000, they both realized the problem was not medical nuance or appropriate cost control  - it was a paperwork maze designed to wear people down. Balto fixes that.

The Origin of Balto

Delivering medicine when no one else could.

In 1925, a diphtheria outbreak threatened a remote town in Alaska. The only serum was hundreds of miles away, and blizzard conditions made travel impossible. A relay of sled dog teams was organized to deliver the vital medicine, with Balto leading the final leg through treacherous whiteout conditions—bringing the serum to the town and saving countless lives.
